With a motto to impart value based higher education and produce useful members of an enlightened humane society, SASTRA University has reached extraordinary heights in a span of few decades. From Shanmugha Engineering College, it has grown to Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, spreading its wings to every mainstream of education including LAW and MBA and earning a five star status from the NAAC, Govt. of India.
The blend of academic excellence and real world experience with moral values has earned SASTRA, world recognition. It has been ranked No.1 among the private-BT schools, by Biospectrum, a leading magazine. It has carved a niche for itself as a Centre for fostering and developing the body, mind and spirit of its students. SASTRA has become an educational landmark in the map of India, sprawling over an area of 25,00,000 square feet and having a vibrant population of SASTRA of over 9000 students and over 700 teaching faculty.
At a time when altruistic ideals and civic interests seem to have given way to power goals and heightened interest in materialism, SASTRA presents a holistic approach to personal and professional growth. SASTRA moulds its students in such a way that their endeavors and interests transcend traditional boundaries. They do not seek to maintain status quo nor settle for observing change; they rather hope to be powerful instruments of change using their dynamic verve to make their contributions to the world.
SASTRA shapes its students' future by fostering a teamwork approach to instruction, encouraging interaction with faculty, providing access to high tech information, motivating them to develop new ideas and concepts, taking personal interest in students' career development and preparing them for success.
International exchange scheme is effective with Harvard-MIT, NUS, Arkansas University, etc. TCS and many MNCs have accredited SASTRA as a centre for excellence. Infrastructural facilities including a Wi-Fi enabled campus and research platforms such as TIFAC-CORE, CENTAB have metamorphosed the R&D into viable technologies and patents. By engaging in meaningful research & development and offering quality education to the students and other learners, SASTRA is indeed becoming a word class University!
While the old and fundamental sciences are being literally “re-searched” to pull out more and more facts and understand them in tremendous detail, there exists a section of research that concentrates on how to apply the results of the former to improve the quality of life on earth. This field, known as the applied science, is very crucial in making practical sense out of our discoveries. Such a field will require the culmination of various genres like physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, designing etc. This interdisciplinary aspect ultimately demands inputs from expertise of each field and sharing of knowledge both obtained and inferred, paving way for the need for a forum, an association that connects individuals. A similar atmosphere resulted in the inception of the BIOTIKOS, The Biotechnology Students’ Association at SASTRA University. Formed by some of the earliest inquisitive minds of SASTRA, the BIOTIKOS remains the most active student association in the university, igniting and passing on the passion and zeal onto every successive batch of students.
Born as an association exclusively for the students of School of Chemical and Biotechnology, BIOTIKOS has expanded to welcome inputs from various external institutions also. Laying a platform for students to display their knowledge and innovations, it has played an integral role in giving them an exposure in various sub fields of Biotechnology.
BIOTIKOS activities happen year-round. We have the weekly TECH-FORUM sessions that serve as an excellent mode of interaction between the juniors and seniors. Such discussions help seniors communicate effectively, juniors understand effectively and sometimes lead to sharing of certain observations and ideas among people of similar interests and curiosities.
Setting a theme for every event and publication, Biotikos is making a thorough exploration of the current affairs in the field of Biotechnology. SAMHITHA XI, themed on Recent Advancements in Life Sciences (RAILS), funded by National Agencies such as Department of Ocean Development and The Department of Science and Technology, was organized in October 2011. It was a huge success with many student participants from various institutes and invited many eminent speakers from reputed institutions and companies all over the nation. In April 2010, it was organized in the name of IGNYT with recent healthcare trends as the theme. Apart from paper and poster presentations, mind-boggling guest lectures by pioneers in life sciences are also organized as a part of SAMHITHA every year. The earlier national programmes include Venspire, Speaker series and Entrepreneurship development in biotechnology.
On contraire to limiting the events to students of Biotechnology, BIOTIKOS has made a remarkable achievement in bridging the gap to various other departments also. The paper and poster presentation in the intramural technical fest Reverberations XII, received immense participation from Departments including Electrical and Electronics.
In addition to the events, several publications were issued to create an awareness of the recent happenings in the field of Biotechnology across the world. Biospace, the monthly newsletter of the Department of Biotechnology, the first of its kind, though young has reached a popular standing among the mass. It covers the technical and the non-technical endeavors in and around the campus of SASTRA.
NUCLEO had a sanguine start, receiving articles, discussions and several other contributions from fresh minds across the globe. Having various research fellows, prominent professors and technical consultants, NUCLEO 7 took a step forward in becoming a well-recognized International tech magazine.
So here we are always the best, forever, striving to grow more and more, every single second. Come and join us now!
