International Conference on Nano Computing - Technology Trends(ICNC - 2001)

16th Dec. to 18th Dec. 2001 - A Report

Inaugurating the session, Prof. R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, SASTRA highlighted the relevance of TIFAC CORE at Thanjavur playing the host for a conference on Nano-computing. He said that Nano-technology was conceptualized in Tamil literature by the legendary Avvaiyar who spoke about splitting the atom 2000 years ago. The Brahadeeswara temple at Thanjavur, an engineering marvel and the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre for research in Advanced Mathematics (setup by SASTRA) in his birthplace near Thanjavur to honour the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan add more relevance to the choice of the venue. He hoped that the conference would make India a trendsetter in the field of Nano Technology and would pave way for greater Industry-Academia-Interaction.

Prof. K.Usha Devi, Conference Convener and Co-ordinator, TIFAC CORE at SASTRA proposed a Vote of Thanks.

REPORT ON ICNC Pre-Conference Tutorial (16-12-2001)

In the first session Dr.Alan.C.Seabaugh , University of Notre Dame, USA delivered a tutorial  on  “ Fundamentals of Nanotechnology and Nanocomputing”. He gave an introduction to electronic devices at the nanometers scale. He also gave an introduction to nanotechnology by three examples to illustrate the physics and potential applications of nano electronic devices and circuits. These are tunneling diodes nano mechanical devices, and quantum cellular automata. These examples illustrate how nanotechnology is being realized by both top-down construction methods and bottom up methods. Also on leading new ways to organize information storage and construct computers.
