National Seminar on System on Chip (NSSOC - 2003)

27th Nov. to 29th Nov. 2003 - A Report

PANEL DISCUSSION & VALEDICTORY SESSION

The panel chaired by Dr.K.S.Chari included the experts Dr.K.Neelakandan, Dr.Lakshmipathy and Dr.C.P.Ravikumar. Three important aspects of the discussion included are: SOC a hype, reality or dream; Whether India can grab the opportunity; and our strength and weaknesses and how to overcome the same. The panel presentations and following discussions clearly brought out the major conclusion that - SOC is a reality and that though in the initial race India has lost a significant slice to China and Taiwan , the country can still pull its act together to grab the opportunities as it is not too late.

To succeed, India has to focus on its strength (Skilled manpower, idea generations, expertise on software and electronic designs) and work on addressing its weaknesses in vibrant academic and R&D community and a solid manufacturing base to support latest technologies. The session highlighted the importance of improving the academic sector on the whole to move them to higher ends of value chain for them to become effective generators of properly trained human resource so essential for the growth of the sector as whole. The session attracted many a lively discussion and inquisitive questions from participants over wide issues of relevance and road maps ahead.

The national seminar was attended by over eighty participants from industry, academia and research communities.  The valedictory address was given by Dr. K. Neelakandan, Ether-Act software Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore.
