IT
sector likely to generate 70 lakh new jobs by 2009
The
information technology (IT) sector is expected to generate 70 lakh new
jobs by 2009,
Union Minister of State for
Science & Technology Kapil Slbal has predicted.
Sibal
was here to inaugurate the 6 Mbps Internet line, Law library and
Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine at the
Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA)
today. "The IT sector has created a world of opportunities and
Indian IT engineers are going to be the technocrats of the
world," he said.
At the same time, he
said it was important to upgrade the quality of human resources in the
country. Though a large number of people pass out of colleges every
year, very few have quality required for highly skilled labour, he
pointed out "This has to change. We have a large base of scholars
and educational institutions who can contribute to the development of

forward," he observed.
BIO-TECH
SECTOR: The field
of bio-technology was growing and
India
's contribution was expected
to touch the $10 billion mark by20 10, Sibal predicted and said at
present the country's Share was around $ 2.5 billion.
India
had institutions doing
cutting edge research in bio-technology and the Department of Science
and Technology (DST) was encouraging them in research.
Pointing out the high
level of metal toxicity allopathic medicines, he said the future
prospects of traditional medicine was bright. "Human body is
getting immune to the effect of synthetic medicines. It is time we
started discovering medicines through our traditional knowledge which
will have no negative impact on the human body," he said.
It was also necessary
to devise systems to compute the level of toxicity in medicines and
eliminate the same through research, he added.
Lauding the efforts
of SASTRA in taking up advanced research in Indian System of Medicine,
Sibal said the DST would extend help to the institution in its
research activities. Secretary to DST, V S Ramamoorthy,
Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA R Sethurmnan, Registrar R Kandaswamy and
Dean of Humanities & Sciences K G Seshadri were present at the
function.
