SASTRA Graduates make it to Cambridge & Imperial College

C.Shyam and Dharini Iyer, B.Tech. graduates from the School of Biotechnology at SASTRA University have been admitted to the Ph.D. programme at the prestigious  Cambridge University and Imperial College, London respectively. Shyam and Dharini were one among the 10 B.Tech. students who were selected to undergo a research internship at Harvard/MIT under the HST programme. Their work at the medical school  in the area of Cancer Biology and Tissue Engineering resulted in quality publications and commended by their research guides who offered them an additional one-year research assistantship at Harvard Medical school. Based on their research internship and the experience gained working with top-notch scientists, they had applied to the Ph.D. programme at Cambridge and Imperial College. Both of them have received formal admission letters from Cambridge & Imperial for a full-time Ph.D with full financial assistance. “Institutes like Cambridge and Imperial are any student’s dream place and its heartening no note that Shyam and Dharini have made it to these world-renowned institutions for a Ph.D. programme. I can recall that both of them were active in various research engagements at the Center for Nanotechnology at SASTRA and demonstrated keen interest in healthcare research. They deserve this and their internship at Harvard/MIT arranged by SASTRA has further reinforced their commitment to research,” said Dr.S.Swaminathan, Director for the Center for Nanotechnology and also the students’ research advisor. The students were also equally elated on their achievement. Shyam in an e-mail to SASTRA added "Currently as a Research Scholar in Harvard Medical School, I am looking forward to commence my Research based Master's in Cancer Biology at the prestigious Imperial College London which would later translate as a Doctoral degree beginning this October. This transition was made possible through the prized opportunity provided by SASTRA University in the form of a research internship at HARVARD-MIT-HST. I thank SASTRA for providing me with this launch pad." Dharini’s was thrilled when she wrote to SASTRA "The research endeavors at Harvard MIT HST as a student of the Semester Abroad Program (SAP) gave me an excellent opportunity to undertake cutting edge research as a Research Scholar at Harvard Medical School. These opportunities fostered my selection into the Ph.D. Program at  The University of Cambridge in the Department of Clinical Medicine  aided by the Jawaharlal Nehru  and Cambridge International Scholarship. I thank SASTRA for giving me the prized opportunity.”
