study. It is hoped that 20 students will be sent to Germany, every year.

The collaboration also enables exchange of Faculty Members. German Professors will be teaching advanced subjects like Robotics at SASTRA for six to eight weeks every year. Similarly Professors of SASTRA will be visiting the Swiss-German University and deliver lectures on Mechatronics, Automation Technology, VLSI Systems and Networking.

SASTRA ACCREDITED BY INSTITUTION
OF ENGINEERS (INDIA)
.

The Institution of Engineers (India), Calcutta has accredited the B.Tech programmes in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Mechanical Engineering offered by SASTRA Deemed University.

This accreditation enables the students of SASTRA possessing the degrees on the above programmes to become the members of Institution of Engineers, Calcutta.

SPECIAL LECTURE.

The School of Chemical and Biotechnology arranged a special lecture on 28th August 2004 . The lecture was delivered by Dr. N. Srinivasan of Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on “Influence of Bioinformatics in adding value to Genetic Data”.

Dr. Srinivasan in his lecture presented statistics of the completely sequenced genomes, the biochemical and biological role of proteins and the classification of protein structure to outline the bio-informatics-based approaches to getting clues about the functions of the newly discovered proteins.

The use of bio-informatics in understanding regulatory mechanisms, substrate specificities and evolution of protein kinesis were also discussed. He highlighted the gene fusion events inferred from the cross genome comparisons, which

helps in the recognition of synergistical genes and functional gene clusters.

TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR TEACHERS

A six-day programme on Teaching Methodology and Communication Skills was organised in two spells from 28th to 30th July, 2004 and from 2nd to 4th August, 2004 for the teachers of various departments, who joined SASTRA during this academic year. The programme was conducted by Dr. K. N. Sivaraman, Visiting Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences. 102 staff members attended the programme.

A similar programme was organized from 24th to 26th August, 2004 for the Senior Lecturers and Lecturers of SRC, Kumbakonam with Dr. K. N. Sivaraman as the Course Director. 40 teachers attended the programme.
