NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON YOUTH EMPOWERMENT, EMPLOYMENT, PEACE AND FOOD

As part of 80th birthday celebrations of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, a National Conference on 'Youth Empowerment, Employment, Peace and Food' was held at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, SASTRA Deemed University, Kumbakonam, on September 4, 2005. Prof. R. Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor, presided over the function and outlined the significance of the Conference in hounour of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan.  

 

In his inaugural address, Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chairman, UGC dwelt on the two major objectives of education viz., to enhance the quality of life and to seek social, economic and individual development of the people.  

 

He emphasized that only investments in educational endeavors will ensure social equity and justice. He also underscored the need to train young men and women to be more responsible, more committed and more humanistic to create a better world order.

Dr. M.S. Swaminathan in his speech said that only 'nutrition and education' can enable human race to reach great heights. He stated that a country's growth should be

assessed not through the usual GNP index but through a new endeavour, namely GNH (Gross National Happiness) as  done in Bhutan. He wised SASTRA should grow like a big banyan tree and become another Cambridge University of South India. He wanted the colleges and universities to establish 'Genome Clubs' to create awareness among people about 'Genses and Genetic Engineering'. 

 

Prof. K. P. Chellaswamy, Senior Educationist; Capt. D. Dasan, Veteran Indian National Army Freedom Fighter; Dr. Bala Ravi, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation; Shri S. Sundararaman, Charted Accountant, Dr. K. N. Sivaraman of SASTRA and many others spoke on the occasion. 

 

In an interactive session with the farmers, Dr. M. S. Swaminathan provided useful suggestions on high yield varieties of paddy and sugarcane and conservation of water and energy sources.  

 

Dr. P. Ramani, Dean, School of Education, summed up the proceedings and read out the resolutions.  

 

Earlier, Prof. P. V. Ramakrishnan, Dean (Engineering) welcomed the gathering. Dr. V. Badrinath, Convernor proposed a vote of thanks.

 

A ROLLING SHIELD IN HONOUR OF Dr. M.S. SWAMINATHAN

In honour of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, SASTRA instituted a Rolling Shield for the best performance in Oratory skills. The first Inter-school Tamil Oratorical competition was held on 9th September, 2005 on the topic "Agriculture in India and the role of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan". Selvan J. C. Premkumar of A. R. R. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam secured the first prize and the shield was awarded to the same school. The second prize was won by Kum. L. Priya of Vallalar Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam.
