      The Ninth National Youth Parliament Competition for Universities 2008 (GRO LEVEL) organized by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, New Delhi was held at SASTRA University on March 16, 2008. 55 students participated in the programme. They took different roles such as the Speaker, Prime Minister, other Ministers of the Treasury Benches, Opposition Leader and the like. The most contemporary and relevant issues were discussed during the simulated parliamentary session. Chandrayan and Space Programme India, problems related to rural employment, Reorganization of constituencies and Distribution of river water flowing through both India and Pakistan formed the focus of the Question Hour. The incident of shooting of an eighth standard student at Euro National School of Gurgaon and similar events that threatened the whole world, India’s nuclear deal with the U.S - (123) Agreement, the State of Primary Education with special reference to the Teachers of India, and Foreign Direct Investment in Retail Sector of India were some of the other issues of concern discussed during the session.

The performance of all the participants was awesome. Worthy of special mention were The Speaker (Nitesh), the Prime Minister (Rajni), Water Resource and Development Minister (L.N. Pandey), Rural Development Minister (Himanshu Jha), the Home Minister (Komal), the Finance Minister (Vineet Shukla), the Foreign Minister (Mohit), Opposition Leader (Srinivas) and the Opposition Member (Dhara).

The whole programme was judged by a panel consisting Dr. S.A. Sankaranarayanan, Head of the Department of English, Government College for Men, Kumbakonam (Academician), Sri Singaravelu, Ex-M.P. (Parliamentarian), and Ms. S. Subha, Lecturer in Sanskrit, Seethalakshmi Aachi College for Women, Pallathur (Group Coordinator, Tamil Nadu Zone comprising five universities). In their observations on the programme, they expressed great satisfaction. They said the students were greatly involved in what they did. Their arguments were excellent. The programme was a good model of parliamentary behaviour. The judges appreciated the students that they have the makings of the parliamentarians in them.
