SASTRA STUDENTS AS RESEARCH INTERNS AT HARVARD-MIT CENTRE IN USA

The Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) brings together the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, Boston area teaching hospitals, and an assortment of research centers in a unique collaboration that integrates science, medicine, and engineering to solve problems in human health. Over 400 graduate students of science, medicine, engineering, and management from all over the world take their training at HST. HST's more than 60 full-time faculty members and 200 affiliates guide these students into vibrant careers. This year, 10 B.Tech. students from the School of Biotechnology at SASTRA University have been selected to undergo 5-month rigorous research internship in the areas of Biomedical Imaging, Biomedical Informatics & Integrative Biology and Regenerative and Functional Biomedical Technologies.

These students will conduct research in any of the laboratories in the Brigham & Women’s Hospital – HST (BWH-HST) Center for Biomedical Engineering under the supervision of center faculty on a project defined by the faculty supervisor. The research expenses will be covered by the host laboratory. The students will be evaluated by an academic officer at the BWH-HST Center for Biomedical Engineering, and will be graded as per the academic guidelines of SASTRA. The scores will be submitted to the academic authority of SASTRA for equivalence to determine the B.Tech grades. SASTRA’s Semester Abroad Fund also provides a monthly stipend of USD 200 to each student to partly cover their living expenses. Such a collaborative venture not only open a world of career opportunities to the students but also a life-time opportunity to work under leading scientists in cutting-edge areas of healthcare research. “We are fortunate to be selected to undergo this unique experience which strongly and positively reinforces our primary objective to undertake research as a career option. The foundation level experience at SASTRA is serving a perfect springboard for this advanced level research pursuit,” said Dharini a final year B.Tech student form the Bioengineering department of SASTRA University, who is part of the first team of 5 students that reached Boston.
