About SRC

The Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre [SRC], Kumbakonam, was inaugurated, in November 2000, by Prof. V. S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. The Various objectives of the centre are to conduct coaching classes for +2 students, establishment of a national monument for Srinivasa Ramanujan, offering degree programmes, etc. The centre at kumbakonam was also established with an objective to provide high quality higher education to the people of kumbakonam and nearby places. Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre in an area of 9 acres of land purchased is a magnificent edifice decorating the historic town of kumbakonam. This massive building has been constructed with modern classrooms, state-of-the-art computer lab, electronics lab, Museum  on Ramanujan's life and work and other infrastructural facilities. The courses have been designed taking into consideration the students' feature and also requirements of the industry.

On 20th December, 2003 the President of India, His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam dedicated the SRC to the nation and also the house in which Ramanujan lived in Kumbakonam which SASTRA had purchased and converted into an International Monument. H.E. also declared open the Srinivasa Ramanujan House of Mathematics [a museum on Srinivasa Ramanujan].

Honouring the Mathematics Legend, Srinivasa Ramanujan

  • SASTRA purchased the house where Srinivasa Ramanujan lived at Kumbakonam and renovated it. The President of India, His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has since declared it as an international Monument.

  • The President dedicated the House of Ramanujan Mathematics containing life and works of the prodigy to the Nation.

  • SASTRA organizes an International Conference, every year, in honour of Srinivasa Ramanujan on various focal themes

  • The first conference on “Number Theory for Secure Communications” was organized on 20th December 2003 . It was inaugurated by His Excellency, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India.

  • The second conference on “Number Theory and Fourier Techniques” was inaugurated by Dr. Alladi Krishnaswamy, Professor and Chair, Department of Mathematics, University of Florida , on 20th December 2004 .

RS for Research in Mathematics

  • The Department of Science & Technology, Government of India has also created two research chairs at SRC for further research activities in Discreet Mathematics and Number Theory

  • The CUB Chair for research in mathematics was created at SRC by City Union Bank Ltd.

SASTRA Ramanujan Award

An annual award of US$ 10,000/- and a citation will be presented for outstanding research in the areas influenced by Srinivasa Ramanujan. The award is open to researchers all over the world under the age of 32. This award has been instituted with a view to encourage young minds to pursue cutting edge research in mathematical applications influenced by Ramanujan and increase the visibility of mathematics both at the national and global level.

SASTRA National Level Mathematics Olympiad Contest [SNLMOC]-2004

Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, SASTRA organized the SASTRA NATIONAL LEVEL MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD CONTEST (SNLMOC)-2004 for XIth and XIIth students to encourage them to pursue mathematics as a career option.  The contest was conducted at New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and 13 other Centres throughout Tamil Nadu on 26-12-2004. 3589 candidates throughout India registered for the contest.

The student securing the first place in the contest is given an opportunity to visit University of Florida , USA for a period of 3 to 4 weeks. SASTRA will bear his / her airfare by economy class and stay.  Students securing the second and third position will be provided with an opportunity to visit any one India 's leading research laboratories for a period of 2 to 3 weeks.  The students travel and stay will be sponsored by SASTRA. Students placed between the fourth  and the tenth  position will be given an opportunity to visit the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre at Kumbakonam and also will be awarded with a copy of the famous Lost Note Book of Ramanujan.  The travel  and stay will be sponsored by SASTRA.

All these visits have been arranged to provide an opportunity to young students to visit premier Mathematics Research Centers and interact with renowned researchers in the field of Mathematics.

Curricular Aspects

The academic curriculum for various programmes is formulated by the respective Boards of Studies comprising experts from the academia, industries, senior faculty members of the department and other associated departments. The formulation is done taking into consideration the recent trends in the industry, established standards, etc. All degree programmes have courses on Ethics and Personality Development, which are in tune with the University's mission and goals of offering a value-based quality education turning out graduates with rounded personality. The curricula is revised every year, or as and when required based on the views of various experts who visit the University.
