Diploma in Vishnu Sahasranamam
The Vishnu Sahasranama as found in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata is the most popular version of the 1,000 names of the Almighty. Each name eulogizes one of His countless great attributes.
The Vishnu Sahasranama has been the subject of numerous commentaries. Adi Sankara wrote a definitive commentary on it in the 8th century which has been particularly influential for many schools of Hinduism even today. Parasara Bhattar, a follower of Sri Ramanuja, wrote a commentary in the 12th century, detailing the names of Vishnu from a Vishishtadvaita perspective, in the book titled Bhagavath Guna Dharpanam. Madhvacharya asserted that each name has a minimum of 100 meanings.
A two year Diploma Course in Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam will be conducted covering all these three commentaries in the syllabus, twice a week for SASTRA students at free of cost.
Students desirous of joining this course are directed to give their names to their Mathematics teachers who will consolidate and send the name list to the Dean/SHS. Other students are directed to enroll their names in the Dept. of Oriental Studies.
For the first three months, Oral training will be given to read and memorize the whole text of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam. Then for the next three months, a basic course will be conducted to learn the Language of Sanskrit so that the student will find easy to study and follow the three prescribed commentaries.
