                        ORGANIC PREPARATION & QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS LABORATORY

               Course Objectives:
               This course aims to:
                     Single stage organic preparations employing various reactions including electrophilic
                       substitution, condensation and rearrangements
                     Green organic synthesis
                     Separation of binary mixture of organic compounds and analyze them qualitatively

               1.  Organic single stage preparation (6-8 Experiments):
                    Reactions  Involved:  Condensation,  Oxidation,  Nitration,  Acetylation,  Bromination,
                    Diazotization-coupling and Rearrangement.

                    Conventional Experiments
                       1.  Preparation of chalcone from acetophenone and benzaldehyde (Condensation)
                       2.  Preparation of p-benzoquinone from hydroquinone (Oxidation)
                       3.  Preparation of m-dinitrobenzene from nitrobenzene (Nitration)
                       4.  Preparation of Glucose pentaacetate from glucose (Acetylation)
                       5.  Preparation of 2,4,6-Tribromoaniline from aniline (Bromination)
                       6.  Preparation  of  1-phenyl-azo-2-naphthol  from  aniline  and  β-naphthol
                           (Diazotization-coupling)
                       7.  Preparation of nitrostyrene from benzaldehyde (Henry reaction)
                       8.  Preparation of benzidine from hydrazobenzene (Rearrangement)

                    Green Synthesis
                       1.  Three component, solvent-free synthesis of dihydropyrimidinone
                       2.  Preparation of 1,1-bis-2-naphthol (Radical coupling)
                       3.  Clay-catalyzed solid-state synthesis of 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin

                2.  Separation  and  qualitative  analysis  of  an  organic  mixture  containing  two
                    components (4-6 Mixtures)
                    Pilot  separation,  Bulk  separation,  Measurement  of  physical  constants,  Analysis  by
                    chemical methods, Derivatization, Physical constants of the derivatives.

                    Components in the mixture: Neutral Compounds: Esters, Nitro compounds, Amides etc.,
                    Carboxylic acids, Phenols and Amines.
