Established in the year 1984, the Department of Mathematics initially focused on offering Engineering Mathematics courses for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Engineering Programmes. The Department aims to train a select group of talented students for academic and professional careers requiring exceptional Mathematical and computational skills. The main areas of research include Graph Theory, Wavelet Transforms, Functional analysis, Combinatorial optimizations, Fluid dynamics, Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Financial Mathematics, Cryptography and Statistics. It has always been the aim of the Department to pursue excellence not only in research but in teaching as well.
The Department has a team of highly qualified faculty members with research interests in recent and advanced fields. The Department has organized several International and National Conferences with paper presentations and invited talks of high quality and has a good number of research papers published in refereed International and National Journals. The Department’s research activities as supported through extramural funds from various government agencies like DST, DRDO, and National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) etc. Besides teaching and research activities, faculty spends quality time with the students in guiding them through their career prospects/job opportunities.
The Department has 31 faculties with rich research and teaching experience. The objective of the department is to motivate, educate and train the students at all levels. Department of Science and Technology has established two research chairs one on Number Theory and the other on Discrete Mathematics. The outcome of the chair resulted in considerable number of publications both at national and international levels and three were awarded Ph. D. degree. The Department has established computer laboratory for Discrete Mathematics under the FIST Programme. The laboratory consists of 30 higher end systems with one server. Since, the campus is wifi enabled students can use and download online resources such as journals, thesis, articles and e-books through SASTRA website. National Conference on Mathematics and its Applications in Technology provides platform for the researchers and postgraduate students to present their original research work and pave way to interact with the eminent professors and co-researchers.

TATA Realty-SASTRA Srinivasa Ramanujan Research Chair in Discrete Mathematics and Number Theory Action Plan for the Research Activities (2018-2020)
Due to the integration of computer-aided technology in all disciplines of Science and Engineering, a wide variety of mathematical concepts are being used in designing customized software codes for Engineering applications. Key concepts from discrete mathematics, number theory, stochastic process are being extensively employed in designing software for applications ranging from data analysis to cyber systems. Taking forward the research outcomes from diverse research teams at SASTRA to crystallize in to applications across various emerging domains of Data Science and Machine Learning, SASTRA has partnered with Tata Realty to establish research chairs to effectively mentor young researchers in basic and applied segments of these areas. Creating knowledge network and establishing state-of-the-laboratory for carrying out research in the niche area of data science through establishment of Data Science Laboratory as part of this collaboration has served to augment research, initiate collaborations and capacity building in this domain.
