Curricular Aspects

SASTRA follows the Choice–Based Credit System (CBCS) since 2001.  CBCS has been designed to facilitate students to complete credit requirements at their own choice of courses and faculty.  The B.Tech. curriculum for students admitted from 2018-19 has 180 credits. All programmes have the right mix of theory, practical and semi-theory-semi-practical courses in addition to project work in the last semester.  The B. Tech. programmes are spread over four years (eight semesters), averaging about 22-23 credits per semester with the AICTE UG–credit being defined as 60 minutes of lecture and 120 minutes of self–study per week, for 15 net weeks (spread over 19 calendar weeks).

 

The course work during the first year is mostly devoted to basic engineering and science courses, which constitute 48 credits. Out of the remaining 132 credits, students have to earn a minimum of 72 credits through core courses, 36 through departmental electives and 9 from interdisciplinary open electives.  In addition, students earn 12 credits for final semester Project work and 2 credits on HR skills. 

 

SASTRA offers 5–year Integrated M. Tech. programmes in Biotechnology and Medical Nanotechnology to generate high quality postgraduates for teaching and research.  The total credits for this programme is 225, out of which 159/161 credits (upto VII semester) are earned along with the respective B.Tech. programme.  15 credits in the final semester are devoted for dissertation.  At the end of the programme, the student earns an integrated degree (M.Tech. & B.Tech.) in the chosen specialisation.  All degree programmes have courses on ethics and personality development, which reflect the Institution’s mission and goals of offering value–based quality education. 

 

The postgraduate curriculum in engineering is spread over two years (four semesters) and the total number of credits to be accrued is 90, about 15 to 25 credits per semester for 15 net weeks (spread over 19 calendar weeks).  The AICTE postgraduate credit is defined as 60 minutes of lecture and 180 minutes of self–study per week. The dissertation content is substantially more (26 credits) for PG programmes.  M.B.A. and M.C.A. programmes have a total of 108 and 153 credits respectively including their project work. All M.Sc. programmes have 90 credits, inclusive of 16 credits for a project work of one semester.  Research culture is promoted at the UG and PG levels through Research Credits, Seminars, Journal Clubs, Assignments, Mini Projects, Paper Publications, etc. and some are integrated in the curriculum. 

 

For undergraduate science programmes, the curriculum comprises 153 credits of which 113 credits are devoted to the two majors (one of which is computer science) with each of them having an equal share.  B.Sc. (Biochemistry) and B.Sc. (Microbiology) curriculum includes the requisite courses for Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT). The student graduates with both a B.Sc. (Biochemistry) / B.Sc. (Microbiology) degree and a DMLT.  In the case of B. Com. programme, the mandatory requirement of 240 hours of hands–on experience on computers is provided during the course of study.  In addition to the hands–on experience, courses on database management systems, e–commerce and ERP are included.

 

SASTRA offers five–year integrated law programmes, B.A.,L.L.B. (Hons.); B.Com.,L.L.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A., L.L.B. (Hons.) approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI).  The curriculum for these programmes is in accordance with the BCI regulations and offers legal and subject specific courses. The total number of credits for the law programme is 279 credits.  

 

The objective of our integrated teacher education programmes is to develop quality teacher educators, educational administrators and researchers by adopting a carefully balanced curriculum embedded with innovative practices.  SASTRA has introduced the integrated M.Sc., B. Ed. Programme in Mathematics and Computer Science along with M. Com., B. Ed. & M. A., B. Ed. with the sole of aim of providing quality teachers for the schooling system.  As teaching profession is being considered at par with medical, legal and engineering, the idea was to provide an opening from +2 level instead of choosing teaching profession as a last resort for the students who could not get admission in professional courses.  This innovative programme has been introduced to attract intelligent and bright students with an aptitude for teaching. Realising the importance, this integrated M. Sc., B. Ed., M. A., B. Ed. & M. Com., B. Ed. programmes were then added under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956, as approved nomenclature of degrees by the MHRD. Currently SASTRA offers four year integrated programmes in B.A.,B.Ed., (English), B.Sc.,B.Ed., (Mathematics) and B.Sc.,B.Ed. (Physics).  

 

M.Sc. Integrated programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biotechnology are aimed at creating workforce for the industry and academia. The programmes are spread over 5 years (225 credits) with a compulsory project in the final year (18 credits).
